Chemical Dependency is a disease that is identified by loss of control over substance use, either alcohol or drugs. Symptoms of chemical dependency may include any of the following:

  • More of the substance is consumed than originally intended.
  • Increasing tolerance to the substance develops over time (more and more must be consumed to obtain the same effect).
  • Continued use leading to the development of withdrawal symptoms when the
person cuts back or stops using the substance.
  • The person uses the substance to relieve withdrawal symptoms.
  • A great deal of time is devoted to using the substance leading to a reduction in other activities (time with family, attention to career, etc.) and an increase in time spent with others who use.
